and come and unchain me from my desk at work! i've hit dire straights people. finally, the play is done and yet i'm still swamped. maybe i need to give it a few more days to catch up and then i'll feel normal again but right now, i still want to pull out my hair and i have a propensity towards violent thoughts about my computer and outlook. they pass, though, thankfully. i don't want to have to explain it to the help desk why there's a big dent in the side of my dell.

anyway, i want to send out a super duper HUGE thanks to my friends who came out to support MADAIR (and me) with the play. katie, amanda, lisa, veronique, and nancy, you gals rule. you really made my week brighter by coming for a visit and to see what we've all been slaving over these past few months. all in all, i feel like we did really well with the play. acting/producing is not really my thing though. i'm not really sure if i have the ego to keep it up for years to come. right now, i enjoy the fruits of my labor but i'm hoping to put aside producing for at least the summer so that i can concentrate on some pet projects of mine that center on my true creative abilities. watch this space.

the first week of the play was pretty grueling which is why you haven't heard much from me lately. saturday was probably both the longest, most stressful, and most rewarding days of them all. KP and i managed to sleep in and i twisted his arm into making me waffles for breakfast which were super yummy (my man has some skills making the vegan waffles!) then i went to print out the box office report and our black print cartridge decided to die halfway through. note to self: most buy new printer to replace crappy old one that will tell you when ink is running low. frustrated and pissed off, i took what i had and ran off to run the box office for the matinee showing. it was a beautiful day so between the matinee and the evening show, i walked over to work (stopping off at a sale at aerosoles on the way) to drop off some things and print out the evening box office report then spent a little time outside in bryant park with some iced coffee, my book and KP's socks.

KP's socks grow in bryant park

KP's socks are growing believe it or not. they don't look it but i knit on them some almost every night of the play. doing two socks at once is enormously tedious especially men's socks (72 stitches a piece!) and it feels like i'm not getting anything done. but soon i'll be able to turn the heels and then it'll begin to look more like actual socks instead of grey blobs. two interesing things to note about my time knitting in public:

  1. many people asked me what i was making at the box office and looked at me like i had four heads when i said i was making socks. by the looks on their faces, you would think that it never occured to anyone that socks COULD ACTUALLY BE KNIT.
  2. one guy looked at the grey blobs and asked "are you expecting?" huh? it's not like i was even knitting cute little pink or blue baby booties! p.s. this was a gay man asking me this question. does that make a difference in how strange that question is? judge for yourself.

by the way, i love bryant park. yeah, i see it everyday when i go to work but i don't often get the chance to sit in the park and enjoy the grass (the lawn that gets re-sodded, i kid you not, close to five times per year!!) and the people. on this particular saturday, i enjoyed a show of two strapping young men tumbling all over the park. multiple flips and somersaults and no one was injured. at one point they had a large group of jews as an audience clapping and cheering them on. then i also enjoyed the antics of some crazy person who had clearly forgotten to take his medication.

I'M CRAZY!
I'M CRAZY!

he sat next to the fountain and periodically shouted obscenities at the top of his lungs to the water in the fountain. now, just in case you are thinking that he was yelling at the fish, he was not. there ARE NO FISH. there's nothing in that fountain BUT WATER. he also challenged the water to a couple of duels, shouting such things as "I'LL KILL YOU!" and "I'M OLDER THAN YOU!" and "GET OUT OF MY WAY!!". everyone else who was enjoying the bright summer day just ignored him. ah, that's new york.

after the evening show, we all went out for drinks and i talked so much over the loud music that i came very close to losing my voice. on the cab ride home, i resulted to all types of sign language to talk to KP and let him know just how peeved i was at the printer (i swear i'm going to look for a new one soon.) when we got home, i got a little present in the mail that had me doing a silent dance of happiness.

sockapaloooza socks received!
sockapaloooza socks received!

behold my sockapaloooza socks! that fit! huzzah! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU, MOLLY!!! molly (sadly blogless... and i was really looking forward to seeing the progression of my socks on a blog) sent them to me from illinois. they're little ankle socks and made from superwash fortissima sock yarn. unfortunately, red is one of the hardest colors to photograph so these shots look really bad but they'll have to do. i never seem to make it home in time to take daylight pictures.

fit great!
fit great!

molly tells me that she had an elbow injury halfway through making the socks and one sock is different than the other, but i can't tell the difference! (molly, if you hadn't said something i would have never known!) i received them and they fit and that's truly what i'm happy about. she did a fantabulous job! thanks again molly and i hope that your arm is back to tip top shape soon.

i'm with cara, though, on this one. no more exchanges for me. there's too much anxiety involved and i really feel that you should blog often in order to be involved (my personal feeling on the issue.) that and too many people just don't follow the rules or don't care. i've been moderately lucky with these things but i think that i'll gain greater satisfaction by exchanging with my smaller group of blog buddies than with total strangers now.

coming up: going to cast on for green gable later this week! i've been called for possible jury duty ("possible" meaning i'm on telephone standby but i'll most likely be called anyway... brooklyn always needs jurors) on the 15th and i want a project that i can work on there. GG on plastic denise needles is perfect. i doubt it will violate any courthouse rules. i just have to remember to leave my phone at home! (damn cameraphones!) the slinky garter stitch wrap is coming along and i'll probably get to the heels this weekend on KP's socks. lots more knitting to look forward to.

ugh I hope you get some downtime soon (deja vu?) but the play sounds exciting! and you got some man-sock knitting time! I know how long those can take.
your sockpal did a great job, but Im with you. I wont be joining these sort of swaps ever for a while, if ever.

I've gotten the same reaction from people when they ask me what I'm knitting. People can be so ignorant with their comments. I loovvve the looks I get on the train while I'm knitting. Classic.

Great socks! I think Alison does a great job with the swap and probably the first one was really really great - but it's just too huge. I understand all too well that turning people away is kind of a sucky option, but there are too many what ifs in these things. I'd rather just give stuff away then have to worry about things fitting and getting something back. No pressure in picking a random number! ;-)

The anklets are lovely! I'm sorry work is such a downer right now. I like to daydream about retirement and that helps to perk me up a bit. Ha! Congrats on finishing the play!

I think angry fountain guy must have been yelling at his own reflection - he's the anti-Narcissus.

glad your life is slowly returning to normal.
i'm too nervous to do swaps. i'm afraid of disappointing people or having a crisis and missing the deadline and getting blackballed forever.
if you ever see a crazy person do something newsworthy, please call me asap!

Oh, pretty ankle socks! Molly did a nice job. And I wish I could have been in NYC to come to your play. You know I would have been there, front and center, with knitting on hand for intermission!

Nice socks. They look like they fit beautifully. I know what you mean about wanting swap participants to be bloggers ... my Sockapaloooza pal (the one I knit socks for) has a blog but did not update it often, and never posted about knitting, except maybe once. It was very hard to know what to choose for her.

oh my god, i'm in the midst of knitting by boyfriend some socks as well. B-O-R-I-N-G! I went with a 2x3 ribbed cuff and then just endless stockinette. They are taking 4-eva!

And your sockapaloooza socks are purty. Very nice!

Man socks are the worst to knit. They don't like the bright fun colors and they have such big feet. The things we do for love! Your socks are lovely and I'm glad they arrived and they fit. What a relief.

The socks are beautiful. What a lucky recipient you are.

Congratulations on the success with the play. I'm looking forward to seeing what you future projects are.

Lovely sock both KP's and the ones from your Pal - I'm with you on the Exchange issue - I'm doing dye-o-rama, and then I'm done. I just don't think I have enough time to really participate in it...and that's not fair to me or my pal!
