many of you who know me know that i have a wide array of taste in music. i grew up on 70s folk music and then graduated to classical music through most of my young adult life. i turned to pop music in college and completely overdosed on it (now i can't stand it at all). then came techno or electronic, or whatever you want to call it. i met some great friends working my first web design job in detroit and they were into the club/rave scene, and especially detroit techno. we're talking about derek may and the like. really brilliant stuff. i was smitten from the beginning and still am! in fact, though my newer favorites have been the magnetic fields, the shins, and thievery corporation, i still listen to techno/electronic music on a daily basis. the real front runners in my ipod playlist are aphex twin, bill laswell, boards of canada, luke slater, etc. hhmmmm, i believe it was a minidisc of luke slater that i really got KP to think that i was the coolest girl ever.

one of the first techno discs i ever owned was EBN (emergency broadcast network.) most of you are probably shaking your heads, not knowing who i'm talking about. after all, my audience is mainly knitters. but if you know who i'm talking about, then you know what's coming! EBN were the bomb (i'm not sure if they're still around) because they took all of these old video clips and mixed them to music. it's the perfect match of video and beats. if you're a media nut like i am, then you'll find their offerings to be mind-blowing. every time i see them, i want to pop a VHS in my recorder, tape infomercials all night long, and make mash ups with them. of course, i don't have that kind of time because i knit too much, but if i did have the time, that's what i would do with it.

so in honor of halloween (the one holiday i can't stand but can't wait for the peanut to be born so that i can dress her up.. oops, i forgot to tell you that it's a GIRL! see how i slipped that in?) i present these videos found on youtube. why today? well, some of them are so good, they're creepy. watch, you won't be disappointed.

(click through to the extended entry to see them. i know that they won't make it to my RSS feed because of the embedding.)

hello

i love the 4-way split screen on this one and especially the pigeon pecking at the tiny piano. there's so much going on here!

get down

hahaha, harrison ford and that finger of his. i especially love all of the clips of politicians in this one.

378 aka conga!

i hear the main drumbeat in this one ALL THE FREAKING TIME in other techno nowadays. i think that it's sampled more than anything that moby ever sampled. this one is the best but only the first 4 minutes are worth watching, after that it's just an acid trip of colors and lights.

comply

this is one i had never seen before today. i love the anchorwoman's hair-do. it's pretty scary in and of itself!

have a happy halloween everyone!

EBN!! one of my very best friends from college who I bonded with because of some horrible CS class we had together and because we both loved certain types of music introduced me to EBN. Said friend is actually a collage artist himself. :) It is SO COOL that you mentioned them! :)

I listen to a ton of electronica when I code (these days I'm a database architect/db developer/dba/blahblah) and one part of the reason I got together with my DH at the evil empire was that a mutual friend of ours was passing some of our favorite work listening -- electronica/techno/eurotrash, including some aphex twin and EBN and Negativland -- from my now-DH to me and from me to now-DH.

Happy Halloween! How could you not love it? I guess it's the fact that it's become a sort of drinking holiday -- which is why I hide in the comfort of my home. A little girl Gleek -- wheeeee!

I do believe that the "pattern support" is much stronger for girl babies than boys. Lots of cute things to knit, from frou-frou girly stuff, to more modern looks. Have fun with the knitting for baby!

Yay for baby girls! Congrats. The rest of that stuff about music is a complete mystery to me.

It would have been congratulations either way, of course, but CONGRATULATIONS on your girly news! Let the pink knitting begin!

Just feeding us juicy info slowly, aren't you? This is distinctly a plan to keep us coming back for more.

Now we can narrow the names down by half.

It's a girl! How exciting!

And I'm saving the video clips for tonight, as I should actually be preparing for this afternoon's class right now...

Holy cow, we had literally thousands of trick-or-treaters on our street last night! So now you know where to take Baby Gleek for her first Halloween! You could even hand-knit her costume! ;)

Hi!

I happened to come across your blog, and saw your question about the "Lainesukat", and if anybody would know Finnish. Well, I know Finnish, but better yet, the pattern is mine, and I have a translated version of it in my blog, http://knitternutter.blogspot.com/ under "Free patterns". So if you'd like, you can use that link in your list.

Nice knits, by the way! :)
