as 2007 approaches i feel the need to set some boundaries for myself for next year. with a baby on the way, and no budgetary restrictions in place, it's time that i curbed my spending on yarn. i know, i know. i'm asking for a lot here but have you seen my stash? i have a lot of yarn in there and it's nice stuff that i should be using to make nice stuff. yet, the constant siren call of yarn always brings me to purchase some on a monthly basis.

for example, check out my two latest stash enhancements:

dale of norway falk
exhibit a: dale of norway falk in black and white

here we have some lovely yarn for the "we call them pirates" hat and mittens that i'll be making for my dad in january.

noro cashmere islands
exhibit b: noro cashmere islands, yum!

and some noro cashmere islands color #5 (original, i know) for a hat and mittens for my mom. now, i did buy all this yarn for specific projects but did i really need to? of course, the answer is "yes" (despite what my mom might think) because i've decided that it's the last of my stash enhancement for some time to come.

i've decided to take on a challenge in 2007 and knit from my stash only. wendyknits has devised a small set of rules to go on but i'm changing my set of rules slightly because i don't spin my own yarn. i'm giving myself 2 "get out of jail free" cards: one to use at a LYS and one to use online. i figure that i've gotta support my LYS somehow (besides buying tons of yummy snacks from them every friday) and that i have to be able to branch out from my LYS at least once. seems doable to me.

now, i think that the only reason i'm going to be able to achieve my goal of knitting from the stash in 2007 is because i'm going to have a baby and for about 8 weeks i'll barely be able to think about yarn. clever, i know, but it's gonna work! that and i have another big project on the burner that will take up knitting time. i'm sure i'll be able to widdle down the stash by the end of the year in time for some holiday yarn purchases (the challenge ends in late september but i'm gonna keep it going as long as i can) and i'll make room for all the new yarn that i'll see and want over the course of the year. that, and i'll save a bit of money that really should be put towards baby purchases.

so, what's your challenge for the new year? i know that my challenge certainly isn't for everyone, but maybe you're interested in trying new techniques or starting your own KAL, or something? leave your challenge in the comments or on your own blog!

That is a great endeavor you're about to embark on!! And I see from your stash page that you have plenty of yarn to make several nice adult sweaters as well as a few baby sweaters. What lovely yarn you have.
I was told yesterday that I should sign up for Knit From Your Stash... Let's see if you can convince me!

OK, sorry to say but my yarn diet (which was working great for the two years pre-baby) has been blown in the post-partum period. You'll have so much time SITTING and feeding that you'll be itching for some small projects. After the first couple weeks, of course!!! Your stash looks great though so maybe you won't go on the binge that I did!!!! Best of luck!

I too am going to try to knit from my stash in 2007, but with a few rule changes formyself too. In addition, I'm going to try to introduce to at least one major new knitting technique each season (colorwork, magic loop, etc). I really want to challenge myself this year as well as use up some of the beautiful yarn I already have. Good luck to you!

wow, i had never seen your stash list before! impressive and overwhelming. i'm not much of a stasher, but i, too, could benefit from some more restraint.
i guess in 2007 i'm going to try to be more organized around the house, eat better and get to the gym more. (bor-ing, i know.)

I am not ready for knitting from just from my stash. I do plan on tackling fair isle (gotta be easier than intarsia), as well as the usual, get fit, lose weight, move apartment stuff.

I'm sure you will do well with your challenge though.

Happy New year to you.

I've been debating the knit from your stash back and forth ever since Wendy mentioned it. I tried one last year, but kinda crashed and burned about 2.5 months and it was only for 3 months, but I like that sock yarn is built into it as well as two get out of jail fee cards. I think I'm going to try it, although not for 9 months.

I thought I had stash! Which I am planning to knit from, at least to start 2007. Maybe get it down by 30% or so. (Your stash is nicer than my stash)

What. Is. Noro. Cashmere. Islands?!?!
This sounds like something I must have!
Oh wait, that's not a very stash-busting attitude, is it? Guess I will just have to give yours a fondle.

I am planning on knitting the rest of my stash also this year - at least before the MD festival make a big dent in my sock yarn! I have too much! (did I just say that????) I want to try some of that Dale yarn (after I knit up my stash, that is) - is it soft?
