yep, i'm 31 today. boy am i glad that i had that big blowout party last year for my 30th birthday! being pregnant sort of puts a damper on a good celebration (what's a celebration without prosecco anyway?) but today is guaranteed to be better than most lately. first of all, i'm happy to report that i only got up last night to pee twice (my usual is three) and even then, i managed to make it all the way to 3AM before i headed to the bathroom (usually my first trip is around 1:30AM). this means that i actually got a decent amount of sleep last night and i feel like a real human being! amazing.

also, my wonderful husband, KP, has treated me to a 75 minute massage at bliss tonight... the "great expectations" massage especially for pregnant women. i can't wait. now i just need to get through the day!

by the way, i thought that you might want to see bedtime bear all cleaned up. here he is hanging with his buddies, croc and curious george, in peanut's room.

bedtime bear and buddies

see? he's clean. so clean. that last trip through the wash really did wonders.

now, onto my fair isle affair. so i've finished with all of the colorwork for the pirates hat.

outside is done!
outside is done!

and i have to say, i'm not sure if i like fair isle. i know, scandalous, right? it's just that it got boring because it's so slow! that, and when i made it to the decreases at the top, everything started to become really wonky and generally frustrating. maybe it's this pattern? i'm not sure, but floating the white across all that black WITH decreases was a 1) a pain in the neck and 2) not very pretty. i'm hoping that blocking will make it look better. if not, i might be done with colorwork on hats for some time. i'm still going to make the pirate mittens (which i've realized that i have to adjust to make man sized.)

another thing, i HATE the provisional cast on that i used. it took me over an hour to get those stitches off the cast on and on to the needles. i used the crochet cast on as demonstrated here in eunny's lace tutorial (Invisible Crochet Cast On I) but for some reason, when i pulled on the end with the knot (as she directed) the stitches did not just pop off the crochet chain. so i went at it from the other end and had to pick the waste yarn out of every stitch. did i do something wrong? maybe i should have used a bigger gauge waste yarn. or maybe it was just difficult because the yarn was black and i couldn't see the stitches as they came out. anyway, it was really frustrating.

do me a favor, ok? as a birthday present to me, please let me know what provisional cast on you like and tell me that it's easy and there's a good explanation of it on the web or in a popular knitting book, ok? if you don't have one, then that's ok too. maybe someone can enlighten us all in the comments.

Happy birthday, Steph!!
Bedtime Bear looks wonderful. Hubby has a few Care Bears from his childhood, and they are looking pretty scruffy too. But in my opinion the old ones are cuter than some of the new ones.
The hat looks great! It's ok not to like fair isle!
Ummm...I don't know any provisional cast-on method. Goodness, what kind of knitter am I?? =)

Happy Birthday! You so deserve that massage!

Cast on....I use the one in the Nancie Wiseman book - I think it is a provisional with a crochet cast on - I had the same problem as you the first time I did it - I ended up picking out all the stitches - turns out I was at the wrong end. I found I have to make the end I need to pull in the future VERY obvious or else I can't find it. So, I wrap a little tape around it....

and glad to see bedtime bear is all squeak clean and back to chillin' with his homies.

i like the first invisable cast on Eunny has on her tut. It's so damn easy it feels like you're cheating. and give fair-isle another chance, you'll like it, it'll get better. promise. :)

Happy Birthday! I'm impressed with how clean you got that Care Bear. Perhaps I should tackle the Grumpy Bear that looks as if it's been through a war, due to my own childhood!

I like the crochet cast-on because I can execute it pretty quickly, and you CAN get it to just pop out, but I have trouble remembering which direction you need to have taken it out to get it to work. I've used others whose names escape me that produce live stitches much more simply, though--some where you wrap the yarn on another needle (or the cord of a circ) and then you just pull that out when it's time. Sorry I'm not more helpful here!

Happy Bday Steph!!

I use the crochet cast-on, exactly the same as the one on Eunny's blog. I always forget which end unravels though... I think you have to pull the yarn on the knotted side through the first st, then the rest unravels like a charm. But I admit that I've gotten stuck before, and, just like you, I've had to pull the yarn through every single little stitch. Very frustrating, as you've found out.
The Phildar method is to cast on with scrap yarn, knit for a couple of rows, then switch to your main yarn. At the end, pick up the st -with the scrap yarn still there!-, then cut and hack through the scrap yarn. Good if you need to get some aggression out!

Happy birthday! The Bedtime Bear looks like a whole new guy after his trip through the washer.

I use a crochet cast on like Eunny describes. As long as I mark the end to pull from, I've never had a problem getting it out. 3 thoughts on this, though --
1) make sure to use a contrasting color smooth yarn (I generally use cotton or cotton blends)
2) make sure not to split the stitches when you are knitting into the waste yarn, or they won't pop out.
3) I knit tight, so I usually insert my needle tip and then pop out the provisional stitch, or just have the needle ready to "catch" the stitch so that I don't drop a stitch.

Hope that helps -- give this one another chance. It's really the easiest and quickest I've found once I got the hang of it.

ah! big thanks to mintyfresh who just jogged my memory about the provisional cast on demonstrated at knittinghelp.com!

http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/basic_techniques/

if i had thought about it ahead of time, i would have just done this cast on directly onto the needle that i'm now using to knit the lining of the hat. totally brilliant and looks super easy.

The only time I used a provisional cast-on I used the crochet method, but it was only for two stitches. I think I am therefore disqualified from having an opinion.

Happy Birthday! I use the provisional cast on from Nancie Wiseman's book (the Knitters Handy Book of Finishing Techniques). I'm not sure if it's the same as Eunny's tutorial, but it's pretty simple. You use a crochet hook and a knitting needle. The stitches end up on the knitting needle so you don't have to go hunting for them when it's time to start. I have to make the end super obvious - I usually tie a bit loopy knot in the end I'm supposed to unravel. The hat looks great, but it's ok if fair isle isn't for you.

I always use the crochet one that I learnt for wendy's toe up socks formula

the first few times I did this it didn't unzip they way I wanted, I think it was because I wasn't careful to knit into the right bit of the crochet. learning how to do a really neat even crochet chain helped

Happy birthday - good luck with the peeing!

I hope it's a very, very happy birthday! Just think, in just a few years the little one will be big enough to make you special birthday breakfasts, like I did for my mom. I think they involved a lot of bits of eggshell, burnt toast, and "tea" - I thought you could just put the loose stuff at the bottom of the cup and then fill it up with warm water from the faucet.

Bedtime Bear looks a wee bit stoned - but in a very clean, fluffy way! He's probably just a little motion sick from all that tumbling in the dryer. And I love the little croc. Not enough stuffed animals have pointy teeth, in my opinion.

Hello...I'm a bit of a lurker but I couldn't help commenting about your pirate hat. I just finished the thing for a Christmas present. I totally agree with you about the wonkiness after the decreases begin. I cannot reassure you enough about the repairing effect blocking will have. I was so relieved to see it dry into a smooth and shapely crown. Your faith in fair isle may just return, after all.

As for the cast-on...why doesn't the pattern start you off knitting the lining as in brooklyn tweed's "Red Light Special"? I guess that doesn't avoid the provisional cast on but it's a bit less messy.

Happy Birthday!

Woooooooooo! Happy birthday!!!!

I don't have a solution to the provisional cast on issue. I usually pick up the stitches then cut and tug at the first few stitches in the round until I find the strand that will unravel the knitting down to the stitches on my needle. I guess it's the hunt and peck method.

Your fair isle will get better and easier with practice. It's always a little wonky and sloppy at first. The tension is impossible, you can see the carried color behind your stitch, you hate it, etc. You also picked an ambitious project. There's a lot of stranding in the pirate hat!!! Don't give up on colorwork just yet - it just takes a lot of practice. But when you're comfortable with it, you get SUPER warm stuff!!!

I'm sure that nature makes you get up to pee so that you get used to getting up in the night, because man, you don't even know the meaning of the word tired yet! You just wait. Happy Birthday. I turned 30 4 weeks before my daughter was born so my 30th was VERY quiet, I just waddled to a nice restaurant and was in bed by 9.30pm. The sad thing is that sounds like the perfect night out now. All the best.

Happy Birthday! Sitch Diva Studios' web site also has a tuturial on the crochet-onto-needle cast on (which I prefer to picking up -- less chance of splitting the yarn and causing problems). As long as the first stitch is undone, the rest should pop off...depends on the yarn, though, some have enough natural cling that they grab on to the provisional yarn.

I usually do a waste yarn provisional cast on, just a row or two with waste yarn and then start with the actual yarn. Usually pretty easy to rip out, though I have heard that crochet cast on is great, literally unzips.

You can check this post at bitterpurl http://www.bitterpurl.com/2006/01/indecision_1.php#comments, I think this is the way I would do it if I ever needed to. The same thing happened the first and only time that I tried a crochet cast on.
