i was feeling a little bored with my knitting projects so i decided to get started on the elizabeth zimmermann february sweater from knitter's almanac this past week. what a sweet little sweater! and EZ's instructions are so basic that i felt like i could interpret them in any way i wanted to.

february sweater in progress

after making it through the yoke of the sweater, i decided that i would divide for the sleeves and knit the rest of the body first before going back and knitting the sleeves. this is what i've done on several other top-down projects and it feels the most natural way to me. i will still knit the sleeves flat and seam them up though. it seems like too much work to knit them in the round (or maybe i'm mistaken??) the gull stitch pattern of the body is nice though i still can't seem to memorize it. my mind is thoroughly gone.

to illustrate, i was in a meeting yesterday at work where i was unable to complete my sentences. i would get near the end of a sentence and completely blank. thankfully, two other women in the room have had babies and totally understand. i still felt like an idiot though. i had to leave early, go home, and nap till 7PM because i was just too exhausted to be useful. this third trimester is kicking my butt.

anyway, after my long nap and some falafel, i knit on the pirate hat last night and finished up the lining!

aarrrrr!

i had to stripe in a big swath of white because i was running out of black yarn but i did end in black so that when i stitch down the lining it won't show through. i'm still very hesitant about liking this hat. i have a bad feeling it is not going to fit my dad. i don't think that i got gauge (i'm too chicken to check) and, though i'm sure blocking will even out the stitches, i don't think it's going to add anything to the size. if it doesn't fit, i know someone i can give the hat and mitten set to who will appreciate it, but then what of my knitting for dad? i'm going to have to come up with plan B me thinks. i will be stitching down the lining and blocking this sucker tonight to find out.

the 3-hole shawl is back in business this week. i received my 2 extra balls of noro in the different dyelot and they look exactly the same as the others so i've started knitting on it again. i'm two repeats away from the third hole! then it's only 7 more repeats to the end. i have a feeling it'll be done by mid-february then i just have to figure out how to block the darn thing. it's HUGE! i'm finally going to have to invest in a plastic tub for knit blocking and i believe this one will be blocked on the bed. it's definitely too big for my blocking board. i have to say that i love it, though. LOVE IT! it's like a big blanket and every time i pick it up to knit on it it makes me happy. i need more projects like this.

i'm contemplating starting on something for me once i'm done with the 3-hole shawl. i'm thinking about doing a top-down short sleeve raglan with the yarn i bought at artfibers in san francisco (the yarn on the left, zodiac). something for the spring when i get my body back. once i'm done with the february sweater, i'm going to start on a 3-for combination knit for the peanut: a hat, some mittens, and some booties all from the brooklyn handspun i bought a while back.

by the way, there's also a lot of good inspiration in the spring interweave knits coming in late february! i see a couple of things i would be interested in making with yarn from the stash!

p.s. thank you to everyone who dropped by (and de-lurked!!) to wish me a happy birthday! you're all the sweetest and bestest of internet buddies. i wish i had the energy to get back to each and every one of you and if i didn't, please accept my apologies! it's not only been very busy around here getting ready for the peanut, but i've also been low on energy. know that your birthday wishes mean a lot to me!

that sweater is precious! (I jumped ahead and started PS early too...) I love the lace detail.

i can't decide about sleeves in the round vs flat. seaming doesn't take that long, and i never have circ's small enough....

that's too bad about the hat, but keep faith - you haven't blocked yet!

I did the same thing with the February sweater. It just seemed logical (to me at least!) to put the sleeves st on hold.
I can't believe you're almost done with the 3 hole shawl!! We need a progress shot...

The pirate hat looks great... i hope that it fits your dad. Maybe it'll grow a bit with blocking? Can't wait to see the 3 hole shawl on you - it'll be smashing!

I love the new sweater. It will be perfect for the peanut. You'll be amazed at the difference blocking will make on the pirate hat. The new IK looks really good - surprisingly good.

I can't wait to see the three hole shawl! I love how february looks too. :)

Here's hoping the hat fits your dad!

BTW, I think my malabrigo merino (6ply) bulky sweater took ~550g. I didn't weigh the sweater itself yet (my scale isn't terribly accurate above 300g), but I did pull together the leftovers I could find and weighed them. Barring another hank somewhere, I think that's it. :)

I'm that way about gauge too. If I don't think I have it, I often am too chicken to actually find out. Denial.

Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well! That third trimester sure is exhausting! How much longer do you have? Hope you aren't working til the end!

I think the hat is looking fantastic. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for it fitting your pa, no-one wants to go to plan b.

Sorry your arse is being kicked in this last trimester, wishing you much rest and less toilet breaks :)

EZ and colorwork whilst pregnant -- your mind and facilities are functioning rather high! Great work on the hat. I think the bit of white really accents the motif.

I hope the hat fits!! I really love that gull stitch! I just got my first EZ book from the library this evening. I can't believe I've never read her. She never appealed to me until recently.

Alright, so it's not entirely my fault - this lack of energy and the impossibility to complete more than one serious task a day..
Only a little bit till the big day!

Definitely time to start a knitting project for yourself, so that you'll have something to wear once you get your normal shape back (I'm so ready for that too - I feel totally ridiculous). I did the EZ sleeves flat rather than on dpns, it just seemed easier and they were super easy to seam up. Sewing on the buttons, though, I still haven't managed to accomplish.

I for one find seaming to be so undesirable, I find ways to work everything in the round! Very cute sweater so far.

And as for being too chicken to check gauge--I am always feeling this way! I seem to firmly believe that if I ignore it, nothing bad can happen . . . Extremely faulty logic, I know.

I think your pirates look totally gnarly. Meaning that as a compliment, of course!

Oh gosh, that hat is so freaking cute! I really hope it fits your dad, it would be such an awesome gift.
And maybe you could block the shawl in 2 parts? I don't know. This is when I wish I had a room with wall-to-wall carpet. Or you could go Jess F&P style and do it in a hotel room! ;)

Yeah for completing the hat! I too hope it fits your dad. It would be a shame to go through all of that work only have to invoke plan B. The Feb. sweater is so cute, too. I love that pattern, and every version I've seen of it is completely lovely!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who starts a sentence, only to have my thoughts evaporate like the morning mist. WHY does pregnancy do that? It doesn't seem like a good survival trait, that's for sure.

What a lucky little daughter you will have! The sweater is darling. And regardless of the size, the hat is fabulous! Hang in there - complete sentences are highly overrated!

isn't that a great sweater? i think you'll eventually memorize the pattern -- it takes a few repeats. but i've never had preganancy brain, so i don't know for sure. stay warm today mommy, ok? hope to see you tonight!

I glanced at your photo of the EZ baby sweater before I read the post and immediately thought: Cripe. I totally screwed mine up! I found the instructions for the sleeves extremely strange. The way you're doing it makes more sense to me, too, but of course I'm not bright enough to realize that I actually AM bright enough to use the pattern as a guide rather than The Law!

The pirates look so great!

Hello! I keep seeing your name around blogland and thought I'd come meet you for myself. I want to knit up the February baby sweater, too. I'll have to do a little math to make it fit my daughter now, though. The lace pattern is so pretty. And I have to say that I can definitely empathize with your feelings of exhaustion and focus problems... unfortunatately, it has only improved a little since the peanut was born. I'm still tired! :)

i love the color for that sweater... and not to worry about not remembering things... i have never had kids, and I still need a row counter and the written out pattern for a simple mock cable pattern. at least you have a very good excuse... i just get mush brain :)
