what was charade..

now you don't. bu-bye charade sock! it was nice knowing you.

isn't

taking a page from laura's book, i decided that these charade socks were just not going to work out. this has nothing to do with the pattern (the pattern actually rocks hardcore) but with my execution. man-sized socks on 2.5mm needles would take me FOREVER to knit and the 72 stitches that i cast on were just not enough. i had KP try them on last weekend and they were tight and damned if i'm going to rip and re-cast on more than 72 stitches. looking back on my progress it took me months to get where i am (or was before i ripped). so my plan is to find thicker sock yarn that i can knit on US4 needles and make faster man-sized socks. any suggestions? i have nothing in the stash except for this that might fit the bill.

so socktoberfest has started and i thought, hey, now that i don't have the charade socks maybe i should gather up my sock yarn leftovers and make baby socks for the peanut! i have quite a few leftovers...

a little leftovers can go a long way
a little leftovers can go a long way

and i think that i can whip them up during october. i really want to try and do it seeing as i failed so miserably at project spectrum. at least i've been mainly knitting from my stash! what little i've knit..

except for this.. (you knew there was an "except" coming, right?) but it does lie within the rules. we're getting the nut baptized in late november and i thought it might be nice to make her a christening gown. one that i can dye when said christening is done and turn into a sweater for the winter and a keepsake for all time. i bought some filatura di crosa 501 on elann.com for a steal and have been knitting this up.

me, a model?
me, a model?

hard to tell in this photo (the peanut is not a good model.. she cries whenever i put this on her!) but it's a top-down raglan-type sweater dress. i got the basic idea from the february sweater and the rest i'm making up as i go along. don't ask for a pattern. i have no idea what i'm doing.

and in regards to my miters, they are just sitting on my couch. i'm enjoying the fairly mindless stockinette of the christening gown while watching "heroes" on DVD. oh god, i'm in love with that show! it's a nice cross between "LOST" and "the 4400". i'm glad i'll have something to watch this fall since none of my shows are coming back till 2008. i was smart enough (amazingly) to start recording this season on the DVR while watching last season on DVD. i should be done by the next week, methinks.

oh, and i'm thinking about starting a project for myself once i get through the majority of this christening gown. i'm thinking flair in artfibers ming. mmmmm, can't wait!

yes mommy!
yes mommy!

the peanut approves!

p.s. i'm making adjustments to the full text feed RSS. admittedly, it's changes that i've wanted to do for a while and i'm just now getting around to it. i put comments in the RSS feed about a year ago as an experiment and i think that my experiment is now complete. if i were answering more questions in the comments, it would be a "value-add" as we call it in the business, but it's not. i generally write people back via email or amend the entry if there were more questions to be answered. so, as of today, the comments have been pulled from the full text feed. it will only update when the entry has been updated. i will still occasionally break up a long entry and make you click-through for the full entry but otherwise, you'll get it all! i'm sure this will come as a great relief to many of you ;) no need to thank me.

That sweater would look gorgous in your Ming. And the Nut's christening dress is a great idea. Do you think that the merino would be sturdy enough for husband socks? It looks really soft ... maybe too soft for toenails and heels? If you don't want to spend money on new yarn (and I hear you on that one!) maybe post some yarn for swap on Ravelry? There's an ISO/Destash thread and I've made a bunch of great swaps that way...

The christening gown is going to be beautiful. So smart to dye it for other occasions too - that is an awesome idea.

Charades would look good in gray! So, the Nut's socks are going to match yours? Oh, that's too cute :)
I am lusting after your Ming yarn. Silk?! *drool* And that Knit n Tonic pattern is very elegant. Plus the stockinette means mindless knitting while watching DVDs, right? ;)

I bought some Sundara sport weight yarn (superwash!) for some socks for the hubby. It's very nice and her colors are hard to beat. You might check that out for the man socks. The christening gown will be gorgeous and the swing coat - wow.

Gosh, Peanut is SO cute. Sorry to hear of the demise of the Man-Charades, but it was probably a good decision. I have SO much sock left-overs, but I'm wondering if I could do a really funky Chevron Scarf??

Aw, it sounds like you need some of Marie's quick-knitting sock yarn! I'll bet she could dye up a nicely manly skein for you. Or what about double-stranding some of the existing stash for a sort of marled effect?

I'm hooked on Heroes, too, although I need to start watching them faster so I can catch up in time to watch some of the new season on TV. It's a little gory for me, but I've always got some knitting to hold over my eyes if it gets too scary.

The Nut is going to rock her christening togs. No one will mind if she cries all through the ceremony anyway. :)

You'll get those baby socks done, no problem--it's so nice to knit a sock that takes two hours, not two weeks!

Sorry the sock didn't work out, but good for you for just rippppping away!
I really like the idea of dying Peanut's christening gown - that way, you get more than a few hours of wear from it. Smart cookie.

Yuck, that stinks that you had to rip that whole sock!

Every Christmas I make Mike a pair of socks out of Cashsoft DK on US 4s with 56st. He LOVES them and tells everyone about his "cashmere" socks. They have held up really well to a lot of wear and washing in the machine.

Looking forward to seeing the christening gown.

I can't wait to see the christening sweater! If and when cashew is christened, I hope to make something. As much as I love my hubby, I refuse to do more than 72 stitches for a sock, too. :-)

I'm impressed that you can get your wips on peanut at all! I love the idea of dying it... definitely some heirloom potential going on there!

The christening gown is a great idea, and it's something the Peanut can keep as a childhood memento when she's older. I love the idea of family legacy knitting!

It's always sad (to me) to see knitting ripped, but if you weren't feeling the love, then it's the best thing. Onto bigger and better projects!

The christening gown is going to be a beaut! What a shame the Charades didn't work out, better to know now than at the toe, what I always say :)

i love the idea of making a christening gown -- especially since you'll reuse it. and i can't say enough about the "flair" pattern! you'll love it.

What could be more special than a handknit Christening gown? How wonderful! It will be an heirloom piece.

Can't wait to see all the baby socks - I love scrap yarn and I keep it all but usually I end up throwing it out after a while - I'm really going to have to start knitting for babies! Can't wait to see how the gown turns out.
