{spend time idly}

it’s time for the mitzvah tanks!

if you happen to work on 6th ave like i do, you get a treat every three or four months, especially around jewish holidays. my little work hovel is located right next to a window and i get my fair share of car horns, sirens, alarms.. but every so often the humble noise of loudspeakers preaching salvation through the jewish faith makes it through the music of my headphones.

let me explain for those who have no idea what i am speaking of. imagine thirty to forty recreational vehicles slowly making their way uptown via 6th ave, running red lights and practically mowing down pedestrians while proselytizing judaism in both english and hebrew.. imagine that these RVs have signs plastered all over them that say “MITZVAH TANK” and hessidic men running along side them, curls rippling in the wind, holding their hats down to stop them flying away. throw a bunch of kids skipping school and mothers carrying babies in the RV into the mix, and you’ve got what i’m seeing out my window.

ok, everything that you just imagined happened not but 5 minutes ago. one of my workmates, sighs and says, “are these people in the same religion as i?”

    Sounds cool i’ve seen them myself perhaps not with the people running alongside it and without the mothers and children inside. and they happened to have a police escort directing them through the traffic lights when i saw them. I thaught it was really cool. I even met one on my way home that evening and picked up guide about lighting the shabbat candles something that really brings back memories for me.

    it is rather cool in the respect that it’s not something that you see very often. i’m from the midwest where the jewish population is very low, so i never got to see any of this stuff till i moved here. so the whole thing is very funny, cool, and shocking all at once. especially when you see at least 40 mitzvah tanks in a row!
