The first pair I had were size 4's and I thought that they would all be that good, got my hands on some size 8's and have never actually used them to knit anything. And as far as reading the same books over and over, I say if you love them keep reading them. I have read the same maybe 4 books over and over for years now and I'm not tired of them yet.
