you know those backpack pages that i keep (crafty projects & patterns in the queue) so that you all know what i’m working on and what i’m thinking about working on? well, you should never assume that it is the end-all be-all of my crafty lifestyle. sometimes i just get the hankerin’ to throw a wrench in the works and sideline all my other projects to work on something else.
on friday night, i returned home after seeing serenity again (yes, it was great the second time around too!) and really wanted to watch the ol’ firefly episodes again before i hand off the dvds to another spider so that she can get all caught up. i ran to school products during the day on friday to pick up a few extra hanks of that nubby cashmere i have so that i can make an extra big cozy and i also bought some karabella aurora 8 to compliment a few balls i already have for a scarf. i put all that away and noticed 4 balls of aurora bulky that have been sitting around since january so i decided to whip up a crocheted scarf based on a pattern from a japanese knitting/crochet book that i bought from kat foreverago.

pattern: general idea from a japanese book, using half-double crochet into back loop.
yarn: 4 balls of karabella aurora bulky in pink, white, charcoal, and light green (karabella doesn’t assign color names to their yarn, just numbers. how boring.)
needles: 6mm crochet hook, darning needle to weave in ends.
i should really scan in the front cover so you know which book it is. anyway, this was a very quick scarf. i started it friday night and finished it saturday night amongst doing other things like laundry, knitting on mom’s sock, and going into the city to meet up with the production company members. the nice ridged effect which you can see better here…

reversable ridges
is mirrored on the other side of the scarf. it’s achieved by crocheting into back loop of the top chain instead of both sides. the karabella aurora 8 is so nice and warm! i wore it today since it’s a bit chilly here.
i made significant progress on mom’s sock this weekend. i think that the reason it takes me so long to make the first sock is because i spend a lot of time sussing out the particulars of that pattern before continuing on and knitting the second sock. the second one always knits up five times faster than the first. anyway, KP’s black-tie holiday party has been canceled which means that i can now work on whatever i like instead of worrying about what to make for that shindig. i’ll also be updating the backpack later this week with a new side project that i’m starting: a cotton pillow made of mitered squares for bedtime reading.
p.s. mom’s sock is the same color as one of our african violets!
